Countdown to New Year
Understand what a New Year countdown measures and how to calculate it.
The target instant
A local countdown targets midnight at the start of January 1 in the chosen time zone. That means New Year reaches different cities at different moments.
Displaying the remainder
Subtract the current instant from the target, then divide the remainder into days, hours, minutes and seconds. Recalculate from the target each tick to avoid timer drift.
Planning beyond the countdown
Treat December 31 as a transition rather than an artificial finish line. Some tasks should close before holidays; others belong in a deliberate January backlog.
