How much of the year has passed?
Calculate the exact percentage of the current year that is complete.
The basic calculation
Divide the elapsed time since January 1 by the total time between January 1 and the next January 1, then multiply by 100. Using elapsed time rather than only whole days makes the result update continuously.
A common year contains 365 days. A leap year contains 366, so the denominator must match the year being measured.
Day-based and time-based answers
A day-based answer counts completed calendar days. A time-based answer also includes the portion of today that has elapsed. Both are valid, but a live progress display should state which method it uses.
Why year progress is useful
Year progress gives long plans a shared reference point. It can help with annual goals, budgets, study schedules and project milestones without pretending that every part of a year carries the same workload.
